The home of long distance cycling in New Zealand
Long-distance cycling is growing in popularity in New Zealand. Many organised "fun" rides now have well established enduro versions featuring multiple laps of the same course for those wanting to test themselves beyond the traditional race distances.
Kiwi Randonneurs caters for those with a spirit of adventure who want to extend themselves and find their limits. The rewards are personal and extremely satisfying.
Kiwi Randonneurs is the national organising body for long-distance, free-paced randonnées in New Zealand. These rides are sanctioned by Audax Club Parisien for randonnees of up to 1000km, and Les Randonneurs Mondiaux for randonnées of 1200km or longer.
In some countries randonnées are known as Audax events but strictly speaking, that term applies only where participants ride together at a speed controlled by a ride captain. Audax events are sanctioned by the Unions des Audax. Randonnées sanctioned under the free-paced rules of Audax Club Parisien or Les Randonneurs Mondiaux are known as randonneuring events.
Our randonneuring events are held throughout New Zealand, and you will be made welcome when participating in our rides. Our rides are open to all reasonably fit riders including non-members and visitors who are welcome to join our friendly and supportive participants. Randonneuring events range from small local events with only a handful of riders through to the feature event for all Randonneurs - Paris-Brest-Paris in which 5,000 riders accept a 1200km long challenge with a heritage dating back to 1891.
Randonneuring is a long distance form of cycling in which riders attempt courses from 50km to many hundreds of kilometres or more, passing through predetermined "controls" (checkpoints). Riders aim to complete the course within specified time limits, and receive equal recognition regardless of their finishing order. The challenge is not in racing, but to complete the event at your own pace within the time limit. Riders may travel in groups or alone as they wish, and are expected to be self-sufficient between controls.
Randonneuring and long-distance cycling disciplines have a long history. You may like to read about more about the history of Randonneuring, Audax and long-distance cycling on our history page.
Many members of Kiwi Randonneurs are also interested in other genres of long-distance cycling, such as ultra-distance time-trials and long-distance records. We are currently establishing how to incorporate these other styles of long-distance cycling into our calendar.
