Stunning scenery, one challenging hill. Starting in Opua in the Bay of Islands, this route follows the old railway line all the way to Kaikohe, before following a gravel trail set out to the West Coast pub of Horeke. A challenging hill climb back up to Okaihau, before finishing with a nice long down hill run back to Opua.
There is a slight change to the course this year. The loop around Lake Omapere is replaced, with an additional section by Opua, to get the distance to 200kms.
The Horeke tavern would make a great place to stop for a bite to eat, but the past two years it has been rather lacklustre in its opening hours. Okaihau is a better option for the food/drink refresh.
Note: I have done the main part of this course on 25mm road tyres, but 28mm or better is nicer.
Time limit for the event is 13.5 hours. This makes it a challenging, but achievable event.
The sooner you finish, the more likely you will be able to order a pizza from the Opua General Store. It is a popular pizza place.
Start time is 7am. Meet outside the store at 6.45am for briefing.
Note, on the dogleg out to Waikare Road. U-Turn at the entrance to the Waikare Marae. If you go past the cemetery, you have gone too far.
Start and finish is at the Opua General Store, Opua.
208 km on gravel track. There is 20km on tar seal back road at the start. Also, there is a 1.2km section on boardwalks at Horeke.
