The home of long distance cycling in New Zealand
Stunning scenery, one challenging hill. Starting in Opua in the Bay of Islands, this route follows the old railway line all the way to Kaikohe, before following a gravel trail set out to the West Coast pub of Horeke. The return trip has a quick 20km detour around Lake Omapere, before finishing with a nice long down hill run back to Opua.
Note: I have done the main part of this course on 25mm road tyres. The bulk could be done, but the Lake Omapere section is very loose and deep gravel. 28mm or better is needed.
This year, the course is not a BRM event. Time limit for the event is 13.5 hours. This makes it a challenging, but achievable event.
The sooner you finish, the more likely you will be able to order a pizza from the Opua General Store. It is a popular pizza place.
Start time is 7am. Meet outside the store at 6.45am for briefing.
Start and finish is at the Opua General Store, Opua.
200 km on gravel track. 12kms is a loop on a gravel road, with another 12kms on tarmac. Also, there is a 1.2km section on boardwalks at Horeke.
